I HAD to take a break from exercise yesterday evening. After the jog the day before, I could feel the ache as I climbed the short flight of stairs back home yesterday. But I really felt the pain when I was bringing my dog for a walk. I could hardly keep up with her as she went down the stairs. My thigh muscles were killing me with each foot lowered and I had to reign my little dog in with the leash because she was going too fast for me!
After cooking and eating dinner, I ventured into my room to rebound but instead, landed on the bed and fell asleep for 2 whole hours! I woke up feeling much better and again intended to rebound but ended up doing some housework and chatting with hubs instead. Decided to give it a rest and surfed the net for some information on the benefits of having ample rest between exercise days.
Something funny happened. As you will know from my jogging post, I had a full meal at a restaurant after my jog. Let me list it this way. It might be easier to read:
I'll call the jog date, Day 1
Exercise: 20 minute JOG
Dinner: Pasta with bacon and pizza
Day 2
Next morning
Breakfast: Snacked on a handful of corn chips (not very healthy but I had no time to eat my breakfast)
Lunch:
Personal Mini-steamboat fried fish soup WITH a whole bowl of rice.
Dinner:
A full plate consisting of stir fried Chinese Spinach, breaded chicken fillet (2 whole pieces), some left over shredded duck pieces. No rice.
Supper:
Because hubs had bought supper home!!! Sheesh! Son scooped out all his veg from his Subway and so I ended up eating a salad and one popiah roll (vegetable roll).
NO EXERCISE because thigh muscles were still reeling from the shock of the jog!
Day 3
Weighed myself and yippee! A slight drop!
This is coming from the cranky new digital weighing scale hubs had just bought for me and when I first got on it, it had added another 1.5 kgs to my original weight. So anyway, I am using it for ease' sake because it is digital and easier to read any minute shift of the grams!
So, yes, despite eating 'well' and resting for a day, my body was still burning something. I say 'something' because at this point, I do not know if my body is burning fat or muscle. It's a complicated business which I cannot explain succinctly in this post. Suffice to say, sometimes, you could be losing weight but you're still retaining more fat and wasting away your muscle or you could be doing it right and burning fat but toning your muscle! Just know that even if you're thin, it doesn't mean you are lean. You could be carrying more body fat than a person bigger than you. Also, if you're not eating fats, it doesn't mean that's completely good for you. There is a theory that eating fats can help you burn well, fats. Complicated, right? Yes, I know. The learning curve is steep and there are so many schools of thought. The thing is to find something that works for you.
I personally find that I am okay with eating rice off and on. I will stay away from adding sugar and salt as much as possible. I could feel my body parts 'burning' a whole day after that jog. In fact, before I weighed myself to see the slight weight loss this morning, I had told hubs just last night that I could feel my body 'burning'. As though the metabolism was 'running'.
I'm better recovered today. My thighs still ache a wee bit but God willing and if the weather is good, I am surely going to pound the pavement today! I'll be incorporating high intensity dashes in between the slow jog. I truly believe that that is the reason why I felt that 'burning' sensation.
Yesterday, someone in my office building commented that I looked 'slim' dressed 'like that'. It was just a simple floral blouse and a not-so-loose black skirt. I thanked her and though she implied it was the outfit that was flattering, I knew that the few inches falling off were making a slight difference. Now, if only that stomach bulge would budge!
