Daiso Egg-Timer

I'd read about it but never seen it; the elusive, oft sold out 2 dollar egg timer sold at Daiso. So I had to buy TWO when I finally saw it on sale. Why? I don't know. The kiasu-ness in me (fear of losing). What if I lose this one? One always needs a back up egg-timer, no? Haha. I gave the other to a relative.

So I tried it out.

I put a dozen eggs into a pot of water together with the egg timer which is made of resin. When I am making hard boiled eggs, I would normally wait till the water has boiled before putting in the eggs. But I chose to follow the instructions. So I set my phone timer for about 7 minutes and went to do something else. When I came back, the pink hue under 'SOFT' was almost gone, indicating that you should remove your eggs just about now if you wanted soft boiled eggs.

I was about to remove one or two eggs to crack them open. Didn't really mind having soft boiled egs for lunch but was interrupted by someone. In a wink of an eye (because the water was bubbling by now), the pink hue had turned to 'MEDIUM'!

I didn't fancy medium eggs so I let the pink hue move to 'HARD' and then finally disappear.

When it indicated it was done, I felt that it was too short a time to really be hard-boiled. I should have listened to my instincts. Instead, I turned off the stove and scooped out the eggs to peel them. I wanted to test the egg-timer, mah! Although the eggs were definitely hard boiled, it wasn't easy to peel the shells off. In my opinion, I'd let them boil about 5 minutes longer and after I turn off the stove, I'd let the eggs sit in the water.

Why would anyone need an egg-timer? Because he or she is as hopeless as I am when it comes to cooking eggs. Would I recommend it? I don't know. I feel a bit wary of putting a resin made 'egged shaped chicken' into the same pot as my eggs! I'd probably use it for soft boiled eggs because I wouldn't want my eggs to be over cooked. I'm not keen on medium boiled eggs and for hard boiled eggs, I'll just let them boil my usual 'long' time so that I'll have an easier time peeling off the shells.

Well, I just had to give it a try.
